16 Weeks

I cannot believe that I am 16 weeks (4 months) pregnant already. In 1 month I will be at the HALF WAY point in this pregnancy! I had my first little freak out yesterday about being a mom, and having to care for such a small, fragile and innocent little being. There are so many things to know I am just terrified that I will mess something up!

Anyway, on to the update:

16 WEEKS!

Baby:
You are now 16 weeks pregnant which is the beginning of week 17. Your baby has grown to around 16.5 cms in length (or 6.5 inches) from head to toe, or about 11.4 cms (or 4.5 inches) from ‘crown to rump’. The babies legs are longer than its arms, and both its legs and arms are moving. The fingernails are well-formed. Baby’s head is now held high, and limb movements are co-ordinated. The eyes have come closer together so that they face forward, and the baby begins to blink. On an ultrasound, you could catch sight of the sucking reflex as your baby sucks his or her thumb.

Did you know?
7-1/2 ounces of amniotic fluid surround and cushion the baby. The baby’s umbilical cord is attached to his abdomen.

Mommy:
For some women, nasal congestion and nosebleeds are an annoying side effect of pregnancy. High levels of hormones cause the mucous membranes in the nose to swell and an increased blood volume puts pressure on capillaries. Unfortunately, it may continue throughout your pregnancy. A vitamin C deficiency may cause nosebleeds, so an increase in your consumption of vitamin C-rich foods may help. Do not use nose drops, other than saline, unless recommended by your doctor.

Mommy Note: I am having the annoying nasal congestion and until now thought it was just the signs of a lingering cold or something. I think we will be investing in a humidifier now since it will help and we will eventually need on for the babies room anyways.

Did you Know?
Right now, most of your weight gain can be attributed to your increasing blood volume, growing breasts, expanding uterus, placenta, and amniotic fluid. Just six weeks ago, your uterus weighed five ounces, but now it is closer to nine. You can locate it about three inches below your belly button.
